So you want to have your own model train layout ? Here you will find some tips to get you started. Just read on.
Choose a Suitable Location
First of all you will have to choose a suitable location for your model train layout. Maybe you have some free space in your attic, your basement or your garage. Even better would be to have your own hobby room. You should be able to keep the location free of dust. Also make sure the place is not humid.
Choose a Model Train Scale
Now you will have to do some math. Get a tape measure and carefully measure the table or area where you will build your model train layout. Depending on how much space you have you will choose the scale of your model trains. There are many scales to choose from, but these four sizes are the most common (largest to smallest): O, S, HO and TT. Take a look at the table below.
Size |
Scale |
Track Width |
O |
1:48 |
1 1/4 inches |
S |
1:64 |
7/8 inch |
HO |
1:87 |
5/8 inch |
TT |
1:120 |
15/32 inch |
Although bigger is not always better, keep in mind that detail is easier to see on larger trains. If you want a lot of scenery and accessories you should go for HO because it is the most common used scale. If you only have limited space you could opt for TT.
Buy a Model Train Kit
Visit your favorite toy store to buy a "tin plate" (wind-up) model train layout. If you want a more complicated, electric model train layout visit a hobby store. Buy a small amount of track, the necessary switches and plugs, an engine and a few cars to start. If you're a starter you should definitely go for a complete starter kit. That way you will be sure you will have everything you need included in the kit. Buy a stable table or a wooden plate to built your model train layout upon. Make sure you buy this big enough so later on you have enough space to expand your railroad empire. When you buy scenery or accessories make sure they are from the same historical era. That will help you built a more consistent layout.
Assemble Your Model Train Layout
Before you start check to see wether you have everything at hand. First lay out the tracks without attaching them. Don't mix different gauge sizes. If everything looks ok start attaching the tracks one by one onto the surface. Clip the track sections together. Glue the tracks onto the surface or pin them down. Pinning down the tracks has the advantge of being more realistic, but it is somewhat less stable than glueing the tracks. Put some scenery around. Finally place your train onto the tracks and bring your model train layout to life.
Take Care of Your Model Train Layout
Keep your room free of dust and regularly check for humidity. Dust your layout on a regular basis. Use compressed air and contact cleaner to clean the connections. Change your batteries and check the electronics. Don't let any pets in. Animal hair is a real annoyance and can make your trains derail frequently.
Enjoy and have fun !
